Collection: Casters for Wire Shelving
Rubber vs. Polyurethane Casters for Wire Shelving
Rubber is softer and absorbs bumps, while polyurethane is denser and carries more weight. Choose based on your floors, your load, and the environment.
Choose Rubber Casters When:
- The unit rolls over rough floors, thresholds, or uneven surfaces
- You want non-marking wheels that won't scuff floors
Choose Polyurethane Casters When:
- The unit rolls on smooth indoor floors
- The area is cold or hot, or exposed to chemicals, grease, or oil
Shop rubber casters or 5" polyurethane casters.
Threaded vs. Stem Casters for Wire Shelving
Threaded and stem refer to how the caster attaches to the bottom of the post.
- Threaded casters have a 1/2" bolt with 12 threads per inch that screws directly into the bottom of Shelving Inc. brand 1" diameter posts. There is no industry-standard threading, so threaded casters fit Shelving Inc. posts only. All threaded casters include step-lock brakes.
- Stem casters have a stem that plugs into the bottom of the post and work with most 1" diameter posts, including other brands. They are difficult to remove once installed, making them a more permanent option, and come with or without brakes. To use stem casters on Shelving Inc. posts, remove the threaded insert first. Stem casters are not guaranteed to fit all posts.
| Caster | Sizes | Capacity per Caster | Capacity per 4-Pack | Brakes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rubber Threaded | 3", 4", 5" | 150, 200, or 250 lbs | 600, 800, or 1,000 lbs | All with brakes |
| Rubber Stem | 3", 4", 5" | 150, 200, or 250 lbs | 600, 800, or 1,000 lbs | With, without, or 2 of each |
| Polyurethane Threaded | 5" | 300 lbs | 1,200 lbs | All with brakes |
| Polyurethane Stem | 5" | 300 lbs | 1,200 lbs | With, without, or 2 of each |
Every caster is also sold individually for replacing a damaged wheel or outfitting units with fewer than four posts.
How to Install Casters on Wire Shelving
This video walks through the differences between our caster types and how to add casters to a wire shelving unit.
Caster Compatibility and Load Limits
Once casters are added, the unit's total load is limited by the caster rating, so choose a set rated for the full weight of the unit and its contents. For stability, casters are not recommended for 8"d wire shelving.
Standard Duty wire shelving is a separate line and is not compatible with these casters. If you are not sure which brand of shelving you have, contact our team before ordering.
How to Choose Casters for Wire Shelving
Check these details against your shelving before you order.
Check these before you order:
- Post brand: Use threaded casters for Shelving Inc. posts, or stem casters for most other 1" posts.
- Load: Choose a set of four rated for the full weight of the unit and everything on it.
- Floors: Rubber handles rough surfaces and thresholds. Polyurethane rolls best on smooth indoor floors.
- Environment: Choose polyurethane for cold or hot areas, or where chemicals, grease, or oil are present.
- Brakes: Choose all brakes, no brakes, or a stem caster 4-pack with two of each.
- Walls: Add donut bumpers to protect walls from collisions.
Casters for Wire Shelving FAQs
Answers to common questions about fitting, installing, and loading wire shelving casters.
Can I add wheels to my wire shelving?
Yes. Threaded casters screw into the bottom of Shelving Inc. 1" diameter posts in place of the leveling feet, and stem casters plug into most other 1" diameter posts. Choose a set of four rated for the full weight of the unit and its contents, from 600 lbs (3" rubber) up to 1,200 lbs (5" polyurethane). Casters are not recommended for 8"d wire shelving.
Will these casters fit my wire shelving?
Threaded casters fit Shelving Inc. brand 1" diameter posts only. Stem casters work with most 1" diameter posts, including other brands, but are not guaranteed to fit all posts. Standard Duty wire shelving is not compatible with these casters.
Can I use stem casters on Shelving Inc. posts?
Yes. Remove the threaded insert from the bottom of the post first, then plug the stem caster into the post. Stem casters are difficult to remove once installed, so they work best as a more permanent mobile solution.
How much weight can a wire shelving unit hold on casters?
A set of four casters holds 600 lbs (3" rubber), 800 lbs (4" rubber), 1,000 lbs (5" rubber), or 1,200 lbs (5" polyurethane). The unit's total load, including the shelving itself, should stay within the caster rating.
Do I need brakes on every caster?
Not always. Threaded casters all include step-lock brakes, while stem casters come with or without brakes, or in 4-packs with two of each.
How do donut bumpers attach?
Donut bumpers fit standard 1" diameter round posts. Slide the bumper onto the post, then add the caster. Each bumper measures about 3-1/2" in diameter and absorbs impact to protect walls.
