Labels

A shelf without a label is a shelf someone has to search. Whether you are running a pick line, a stockroom, a parts crib, or a library, label holders turn guesswork into a two-second glance.

We carry label holders and inserts built for the shelving we sell — wire shelving with and without mats, industrial steel shelving, wood shelves, pallet rack, bins, and baskets. Magnetic, adhesive, clip-on, and slide-in styles in a range of pack sizes, most shipping the same day.

Not sure which style fits your setup? Start with the compatibility chart below, or tell us what you are labeling and we will spec it for you.

How to choose a label holder

Match the mount to the surface

Magnetic holders grip any ferrous steel surface — shelf edges, rack beams, filing cabinets, toolboxes — and reposition in seconds, which makes them the right call for anything that changes seasonally or by the season's pick. Adhesive holders are for surfaces a magnet will not hold: plastic bins, wood shelves, coated wire. They are permanent by design, so measure twice. Clip-on and slide-in holders mount to a shelf lip or wire without adhesive or magnets at all, which is why they are the default for wire shelving and the easiest to move without leaving residue.

Match the holder to the shelf, not the label

A holder built for a 1" wire shelf edge will not seat on a solid steel shelf, and a top-loader sized for a boxed shelf lip will not clip to a wire basket. The chart below maps every holder to the surfaces it is designed for.

Then size the insert

Label holders and inserts are sold separately for a reason — the holder lasts years, the label changes constantly. Measure the visible window height of your holder, not the overall holder height, and order inserts to match: under 1", 1" to 2", or over 2".

Buy inserts in depth

This is the part most people under-order. Holders are a one-time purchase and last for years. Inserts are a consumable, and running out mid-relabel stalls the whole project.

Write-on and magnetic labeling

When locations change weekly, printed labels are a liability. Our Write-On Magnetic Labels come pre-cut, and our Plain and Colored Write-On / Wipe-Off Magnetic Rolls let you cut to any length you need. Colored rolls double as a zone-coding system — one color per department, aisle, or pick priority — which is the cheapest visual management upgrade in a warehouse.

Frequently asked questions

Work top-down and left-to-right so the numbering matches the way pickers actually travel. Label the aisle first, then each bay upright, then each beam level, then individual bin positions. Use magnetic holders on beams so the scheme survives a reslot, and keep the character height large enough to read from your longest scan distance — roughly 1" of character height per 10 feet.

The holder is the permanent plastic or magnetic frame that mounts to your shelf. The insert is the printed card that slides into it. Holders are sold in packs; inserts are sold separately by window height so you can reorder labels without replacing hardware.

Check the individual product page — some ship with a starter set and some do not. Inserts are stocked separately in three heights so you can reorder without replacing the holder.

Only if the wire is ferrous steel and the contact area is wide enough. Chrome-plated wire shelving usually holds a magnet; epoxy-coated and stainless often do not. For wire shelving, clip-on and slide-in holders are the safer choice.

Measure the visible window of the holder, not the holder itself. Then order inserts in the matching height band — under 1", 1" to 2", or over 2".

Assume no. Adhesive holders are designed to stay put. If you expect to move labels, use magnetic or clip-on styles instead.

Count one per label position, then add ten percent. Most projects discover positions they had not mapped once they start.
