Collection: Wire Carts, Trucks, & Bin Units
Types of Wire Carts and Trucks in This Collection
The collection covers five cart styles. The right one depends on what you're moving, how high it needs to stack, and whether the cart needs a push handle.
| Cart Type | Best For | Shelves | Sizes (D x W x H) | Capacity* | Casters |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wire Utility Carts with Handles | Moving supplies, dishware, and tools at waist height | 2 or 3 | 18" or 24"D, 30"–72"W, 40"H | 900 lbs | 4"–5" rubber, step-lock brakes |
| 4-Shelf Wire Carts | Moving and storing bulky stock at full height | 4 | 12"–24"D, 36"–72"W, 60"/70"/102"H | 1,200 lbs | 5" polyurethane |
| 5-Shelf Wire Carts with 3" Casters | Mobile storage with more shelf levels and lighter loads | 5 | 12"–36"D, 36"–72"W, 58"–96"H | 600 lbs | 3" rubber |
| 3-Shelf Wire Carts (12" & 14"D) | Tight aisles, under-counter, and small stockrooms | 3 | 12" or 14"D, 12"–72"W, 38"H | 600 lbs (200 lbs per shelf) | 3" rubber, step-lock brakes |
| Basket Carts & Picking Carts | Round, loose, or fragile items; order picking | 2–5 basket shelves | 18" or 24"D, 24"–60"W, 38"–80"H | 600–1,200 lbs | 3"–5", with brakes |
*Total capacity, evenly distributed. See individual product pages for exact ratings by size.
Wire Bin Units
AkroBin and ShelfMax bin units pair 4 chrome wire shelves with plastic bins for small-parts storage. They ship on leveling feet, not casters, so they are stationary unless casters are added. Bins come in several colors for color-coding by department or part type.
Light-Duty Rolling Carts
The standard duty 3-tier carts use 3/4" posts and 2" casters and hold 88 lbs per shelf. They suit offices, break rooms, and home use, not commercial transport.
Wire Cart Weight Capacity Depends on Caster Size
On a wire cart, the casters usually set the total weight limit, not the shelves. A 5-shelf cart on 3" casters is rated for 600 lbs, while a 4-shelf cart of the same footprint on 5" polyurethane casters is rated for 1,200 lbs. If you're moving heavy stock, choose by caster first and shelf count second.
| Caster on the Cart | Total Cart Capacity | Carts in This Collection |
|---|---|---|
| 2" polypropylene | 88 lbs per shelf | Standard duty 3-tier carts |
| 3" rubber | 600 lbs | 5-shelf carts, 12"/14"D 3-shelf carts, utility basket cart |
| 4"–5" rubber, threaded | 900 lbs | 2- and 3-shelf utility carts with handles |
| 5" polyurethane | 1,200 lbs | 4-shelf carts, wire basket cart, picking cart |
All ratings assume the load is spread evenly across the shelves. Heavy items concentrated on one shelf or one corner reduce what the cart can safely carry.
Rubber vs. Polyurethane Casters
Rubber casters roll more quietly and absorb bumps better over thresholds, tile grout, and rougher floors, but they carry less weight. Polyurethane casters carry more and roll easily under heavy loads on smooth indoor floors, though they can crack if rolled over rocks or debris. Most utility carts include step-lock brakes so the cart stays put while loading.
Listed Cart Heights Include the Casters
On the 5-shelf carts, the unit is about 4" shorter without casters. Check doorway, pass-through, and ceiling clearance against the full listed height.
Chrome Wire Carts Are Built for Dry, Indoor Use
Every cart in this collection has a chrome-plated steel finish and is listed for indoor, dry storage only. Chrome is bright, easy to wipe down, and the open wire lets air and light through, which is why chrome carts are common in dry-goods stockrooms, linen rooms, and prep areas that stay dry.
Chrome is not the right finish for walk-in coolers, dish rooms, or wash-down areas, where moisture and condensation can lead to rust. For those spaces, look at green epoxy wire shelving or rust-resistant wire shelving and add wire shelving casters to create a mobile unit.
NSF approval: Most carts here are listed as NSF approved, including the utility carts, 4- and 5-shelf carts, basket carts, and picking cart. Confirm on the product page if NSF listing is required for your facility, or shop NSF carts.
Choosing a Wire Cart Size and Shelf Count
A cart has to fit its load, its storage spot, and every doorway and aisle along its route. Size it for the narrowest point it has to pass through, not just where it parks.
Depth
- 12" & 14"D: Narrow aisles, closets, and smaller items like supplies, cans, and paperwork.
- 18"D: The most common all-purpose depth; fits most standard doorways easily.
- 24"D: Food pans, bus tubs, cases, and bulkier boxes.
- 36"D: Oversized loads on 48"–72"W 5-shelf carts. Check doorway clearance.
Width
Widths run from 36" to 72" on most carts. Wider carts carry more per shelf level, but they're harder to steer in tight spaces. On the utility carts, 54"–72"W models use larger 5" casters.
Height & Shelf Count
- 38"–40" (2–3 shelves): Work height for moving items between stations.
- 58"–70" (4–5 shelves): Mobile storage that stays loaded and rolls where it's needed.
- 76"–102": Maximum storage in high-ceiling stockrooms. Keep heavy items on lower shelves.
Shelves on all carts adjust in 1" increments, so spacing can change as stored items change.
Wire Carts With and Without Push Handles
The 2- and 3-shelf utility carts include two push handles and donut bumpers, which protect walls and doorframes during frequent moves. The 4- and 5-shelf carts do not include handles or bumpers; they're meant to be rolled occasionally rather than pushed all day. Wire shelving parts and accessories include handles, bumpers, and other add-ons.
Wire Cart Compatibility, Parts & Add-Ons
Most carts here use standard 1" diameter wire shelving posts with 1" shelf adjustment and plastic split sleeves, so many standard wire shelving parts can be used to replace or extend them.
- Replacement casters: Shelving.com threaded casters screw into the post bottom with a 1/2"-13 thread and are specific to Shelving.com posts. Stem casters fit most 1" posts from other brands but require removing the threaded insert.
- Extra shelves: Add a shelf of the same depth and width at any 1" position on the posts.
- Shelf liners, dividers, and ledges: Keep small items from falling through or sliding off during moves.
Not interchangeable: The standard duty 3-tier carts use 3/4" posts, so commercial 1" shelves, posts, and casters won't fit them.
Where Wire Utility Carts and Trucks Are Used
Food Service & Restaurants
Utility carts move dishware, dry goods, and prep supplies between the kitchen, storeroom, and dining room. 24"D carts fit food pans and bus tubs. Use chrome in dry areas only.
Healthcare & Hospitality
Taller 4- and 5-shelf carts stage linens, supplies, and patient-room restocks. The open wire allows airflow and keeps contents visible.
Warehouses, Stockrooms & Order Picking
The picking cart combines basket shelves, a push handle, and a basket for a scanner or clipboard. 4-shelf carts on 5" poly casters move cases between receiving and storage.
Mailrooms, Offices & Schools
Narrow 12" and 14"D carts roll mail, files, and supplies through hallways and fit into small storage rooms between uses.
Parts & Maintenance Rooms
Bin units keep small parts, fasteners, and hardware sorted in color-coded bins, and basket carts hold loose or round items that would roll off flat shelves.
Wire Carts vs. Stationary Wire Shelving with Casters
A complete wire cart ships with shelves, posts, and matched casters, and it's rated as a cart. Adding casters to a stationary unit works too, but the unit's capacity drops to the caster rating once they're mounted.
Choose a Complete Wire Cart When You Need:
- A mobile unit in one order, with casters already matched to the load rating
- Push handles and donut bumpers for frequent moves
- A known capacity of 600, 900, or 1,200 lbs
- Basket shelves or a picking setup for loose items
Choose Other Mobile Wire Storage When You Need:
- Wire shelving casters to make shelving you already own mobile
- Epoxy or rust-resistant shelving with casters for coolers and wet areas
- High-density mobile shelving that slides on a floor track to save space
- Wire security carts for lockable mobile storage
If you need to move stock around a dry, indoor facility, start with a complete wire cart. If you already own shelving or need a moisture-resistant finish, add casters to a stationary unit instead.
How to Choose a Wire Utility Cart
- Weigh the load. Pick a caster class that covers it: 600 lbs (3"), 900 lbs (4"–5" rubber), or 1,200 lbs (5" poly).
- Measure the route. Check the narrowest doorway, elevator, and aisle against the cart's width, depth, and full height with casters.
- Match the depth to the items. 12"–14" for small supplies, 18" for general use, 24" for pans, tubs, and cases.
- Decide how often it moves. Frequent pushing calls for a utility cart with handles and bumpers.
- Check the environment. Chrome carts are for dry, indoor areas only.
- Consider the contents. Round, loose, or fragile items do better on basket shelves with raised sides.
- Confirm NSF status on the product page if your facility requires it.
Wire Utility Cart FAQs: Assembly, Capacity & Use
Answers to common questions about assembling, loading, expanding, and using chrome wire carts and shelving trucks.
Do wire carts come assembled?
No. Carts ship as shelves, posts, and casters and assemble without tools. A rubber mallet helps seat the shelves on the plastic split sleeves.
How much weight can each shelf on a wire cart hold?
Cart ratings are listed as a total, evenly distributed load. The 12"D 3-shelf carts are rated at 200 lbs per shelf. For other carts, spread the total rating across the shelves in use and keep heavier items on the lower shelves.
Can I add a shelf to a wire cart?
Yes, on carts with 1" posts. Add a shelf of the same depth and width at any 1" position. Adding shelves does not increase the cart's total weight capacity.
Do wire cart casters lock?
Utility carts, 12" and 14"D 3-shelf carts, basket carts, and the picking cart include casters with brakes. Check the product page for caster details on 4- and 5-shelf carts.
Can I use a chrome wire cart outdoors or in a walk-in cooler?
No. These carts are rated for indoor, dry use, and moisture can cause chrome to rust. For coolers and wet areas, add casters to green epoxy or rust-resistant wire shelving.
Are the wire bin units mobile?
Bin units ship on leveling feet. They can be made mobile with compatible wire shelving casters, which sets their capacity to the caster rating.
Can I pick up my wire cart order?
Free warehouse pickup is available in Madison Heights, Michigan, on many items. For large or multi-cart orders, contact the Shelving.com team for help with sizing and quotes.
