Add-On Wire Shelving Units to Extend Your Existing Chrome Wire Shelving

Add-on wire shelving units, sometimes called extension kits, expand a chrome wire shelving unit you already have. Instead of four posts, each add-on has two posts and uses S-hooks to attach its shelves to the shelves of your existing unit, so the two share a set of posts. Add-ons can extend a unit in a straight line, at a right angle to form an L-shaped corner, or front-to-back to make it deeper.

Shelving Inc. add-on units come in depths from 8" to 36", widths from 8" to 72", and heights from 54" to 96", with 4 or 5 shelves. Capacity ranges from 400 to 800 lbs per shelf, evenly distributed, depending on shelf size. Every add-on is NSF certified, ships the next business day, and is available for free local pickup at our Madison Heights, MI warehouse.

Building a Row

Wire Shelving Starter Units vs. Add-On Units

Every row of wire shelving starts with a starter unit, which has four posts and stands on its own. Add-on units have two posts and attach to the end of a starter unit, so you can extend storage without buying a second complete unit.

Choose a Starter Unit When:

  • You are setting up the first unit in a row
  • You need a single freestanding shelving unit
  • You are starting a new row in a different spot

Choose an Add-On Unit When:

  • You already have a chrome wire shelving unit in place
  • You want to extend it in a straight line, around a corner, or front-to-back
  • The add-on has the same number of shelves as your existing unit

Configurations

End-to-End, L-Shaped, and Front-to-Back Add-On Wire Shelving Layouts

The same add-on unit can attach three ways. The S-hooks hang on the end of your existing shelves, and the curve of each hook supports the new shelf.

End-to-End Runs

Attach the add-on to the end of your unit to extend the length of your shelves. Repeat with more add-ons to build a longer row along a wall or create aisles of storage.

L-Shaped Corners

Attach the add-on at a right angle to turn a corner. Because the units share posts, the corner has no extra posts in the way and items stored there stay easy to reach.

Front-to-Back Depth Extensions

Attach the add-on to the front or back of your unit to make it deeper. This layout is less common, but it works well when you need deeper shelves without replacing the unit you already have.

What Comes with an Add-On Wire Shelving Unit

Each pre-configured add-on unit includes everything needed to attach it to an existing unit:

  • Wire shelves: 4 or 5 chrome wire shelves with plastic split sleeves (shelf clips).
  • Posts: 2 posts with leveling feet, in the height you select. Posts 64" tall and taller ship in two pieces that twist together.
  • S-hooks: 2 per shelf, which attach each new shelf to a shelf on your existing unit.

Adding a shelf later? Each extra shelf on an add-on needs an S-hook 2-pack to connect it to your existing unit.

Need a different number of shelves? Pre-configured add-ons come with 4 or 5 shelves, but you can build your own add-on with 2 posts, the wire shelves you need, and 2 S-hooks per shelf. Find posts, shelves, and S-hooks in our wire shelving parts and accessories collection.

How to Choose the Right Add-On Wire Shelving Unit

An add-on has to line up with the unit it attaches to. Check these details against your existing shelving before you order.

Check these before you order:

  • Depth: For end-to-end runs, choose the same depth as your existing unit so the shelves line up. Add-ons come in 8"d to 36"d.
  • Shelf count: Match your existing unit, since each new shelf hooks onto an existing one. For a count other than 4 or 5, build your own add-on.
  • Height: Pick a post height that works with your existing unit. Leveling feet add 1" to the total height.
  • Width: You can match the width of your existing unit, but you don't have to. Choose the width that fits your space. See the Wire Shelving Size Guide.
  • Capacity: Shelves hold 400 to 800 lbs, evenly distributed, depending on size. Check the product page for each rating.
  • Environment: Chrome add-on units are made for indoor, dry storage only.

Shop Add-On Wire Shelving by Depth

Browse add-on units by depth: 8"d, 10"d, 12"d, 14"d, 18"d, 21"d, 24"d, 30"d, or 36"d add-on wire shelving units.

Shelf capacity ranges from 400 to 800 lbs, evenly distributed, and varies by depth and width. Each product page lists the rating for that size.

Add-On Units Need an Existing Starter Unit

An add-on unit has only two posts and cannot stand on its own. It must be attached with S-hooks to an existing Shelving Inc. chrome wire shelving unit.

Each add-on you connect also increases the total weight load across the run. Long runs of connected wire shelving should be properly aligned, leveled, and anchored if required by the manufacturer to prevent wobbling or tipping.

Shelving Inc. parts are generally not compatible with other brands of wire shelving. If you are extending a unit from another brand, contact our team before ordering.

Add-On Wire Shelving FAQs

Answers to common questions about attaching, sizing, and expanding add-on wire shelving.

Are S-hooks included with add-on wire shelving units?

Yes. Each add-on includes 2 S-hooks per shelf, so a 4-shelf add-on comes with 8 S-hooks. If you add an extra shelf later, you will need an S-hook 2-pack for that shelf.

Can I attach more than one add-on unit?

Yes. Each add-on attaches to the shelves of the unit before it, so you can keep extending a row or add units on more than one side.

Will an add-on unit work with another brand of wire shelving?

Shelving Inc. add-on units are designed to attach to Shelving Inc. chrome wire shelving, and parts are generally not compatible with other brands. Contact our team before ordering if your existing unit is from another manufacturer.

Do I need tools to assemble an add-on unit?

No. Shelves attach to the posts with plastic split sleeves, and the S-hooks hang on the existing unit's shelves. A rubber mallet helps set shelves securely and release them when you reconfigure. Instructions are on our assembly guides page.

Can the shelves on an add-on unit be adjusted?

Yes. Shelves adjust in 1" increments along the posts. Because each add-on shelf hooks onto a shelf of your existing unit, adjust the matching shelves on both units together so they stay level.

Why do my chrome shelves have slight color differences?

Chrome wire shelving is produced in batches, so slight variations in tone, including subtle yellow or blue hues, can occur between items, especially when an add-on is ordered separately from the original unit. These differences are normal and do not affect performance or durability.

When should I contact Shelving.com before ordering?

Reach out if you are planning a long row or an L-shaped layout, extending a unit you bought elsewhere, or not sure which depth, height, or shelf count matches your existing shelving. Our team can put together a complete parts list and quote, and we offer free site visits for larger projects.
