Nailers and staplers fire a fastener and reset in one action, which is the difference between fastening a run of material in minutes and doing it with a hammer. Framing nailers at 30 degrees drive collated nails into structural timber for walls, decking, sheathing and formwork, and the cordless versions remove the compressor, the hose and the setup time that used to make a nailer worth it only on larger jobs. Crown staplers put a wider fastener into sheet goods, lath, insulation and wiring runs where a nail head would pull through. Purpose-built fence post staple guns drive heavy staples into wood poles and posts for fencing and cable fixing, at a rate that makes hand-stapling a long run look unreasonable. The fastener is not an afterthought: gauge, crown width, length and collation all have to suit the specific magazine, and a tool will not reliably fire a fastener it was not built for.
