Distance, in whatever form the job needs it. A pocket tape is the tool that gets used fifty times a day, so the things that matter are a blade that stands out unsupported before it folds, a hook that grips the edge, and in a magnetic tape a tip that holds on steel while you work alone. Long open reel tapes take over past thirty feet: fiberglass for anything near an energized conductor, because a steel tape is a conductor and has no place on a live site. Folding rules answer what a tape cannot - they stay rigid, so a wood or composite rule measures across an opening, holds a depth overhead, and reads inside a box without a second pair of hands. Inside-reading rules put the scale where you need it for exactly that work. A measuring wheel is for ground distance where a tape is useless: trench runs, conduit routes, cable pulls, pole spans. Digital wheels keep a running total and are quicker than pacing when the number has to be right. Check a tape's hook for play before trusting a close measurement.
