A Relaxed Evening by the Ocean That Gives Back

Brothers By the Sea is a small, casual charity event in South Florida. It's an easy way to meet the Capuchin friars, hear what's happening in their Province, and learn about the needs of people in our communities and how you can help. There's no dress code, no ticket, and no hard sell. Just good food, good company, and a cause worth supporting.

Shelving.com believes in the importance of a strong and connected community. We cover every cost of the evening so that each donation goes straight to the friars' work with the poor, the sick, migrants, and families in need.

From Detroit to the Atlantic Coast

Our Capuchin Partnership: Rooted in Michigan, Growing Along the East Coast

Shelving.com's support for the Capuchins started at home in Metro Detroit. Brothers By the Sea carries that same commitment to the friars serving New Jersey, the Southeast, and South Florida.

Where It Started: Benefit on the Bay in Michigan

Since 1993, Shelving.com has hosted Benefit on the Bay on Lake St. Clair to raise money for the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit. The Soup Kitchen serves up to 1,700 free meals a day, along with clothing, shower, social work, and recovery programs for neighbors in need.

That partnership with the Detroit Capuchins shaped how we give back: we fund the event, and the community's generosity goes entirely to the friars.

Where We're Going: New Jersey, the Southeast & Florida

Brothers By the Sea extends that support to the Capuchin Province of the Sacred Stigmata of St. Francis, based in Union City, New Jersey, whose friars serve communities along the East Coast and into the Southeast.

In South Florida, that includes the Saint Pio Friary in Miami, one of the Province's ten fraternities. Your donation at this event helps these friars care for the people right here in our own region.

One mission, two coasts: what began as a Michigan tradition now helps Capuchin friars serving the Southeast and New Jersey.

Who Are the Capuchin Franciscans?

The Capuchins are an evangelical fraternity of Catholic friars. Their inspiration comes from the life of Christ, Sacred Scripture, and the example and writings of St. Francis of Assisi, who lived a simple and humble life. Service to God and to others is the heart of their lives and communities.

The Capuchin Franciscans strive to follow St. Francis, who points them to Christ, through five charisms:

  • Contemplation: a life grounded in prayer
  • Fraternity: living and serving together as brothers
  • Minority: humility and simplicity, standing with the least
  • Ministry: bringing the Gospel to people through service
  • Justice, peace, and ecology: caring for people and all of creation

What Do the Capuchin Friars Do?

The Capuchins serve the Lord and the Church in a wide variety of ministries. Capuchin friars:

  • Preach God's Word
  • Comfort the sick
  • Direct retreats
  • Minister to migrants and their families
  • Serve in parishes
  • Tend to the homeless, the poor, and people in need
