Cant Hooks & Log Handling

Collection: Cant Hooks & Log Handling

A cant hook rolls a log. The handle gives leverage and the hinged hook swings down to bite into the timber as the handle is levered, so a log that two people could not shift by hand turns with one. It is the tool for positioning a pole before it is worked on, rolling a log clear of a cut, turning timber to reach the underside, and separating a stack โ€” all jobs where the alternative is getting hands and feet somewhere a rolling log can reach them, which is how people get hurt. Handle length sets both the leverage and how far the operator stands from the load: a 48 inch hook is maneuverable and suits smaller timber, while 66 inch and longer gives more purchase on larger diameters and keeps the user further back. The hook itself should be sharp enough to bite first time โ€” a hook that skates off under load is worse than no tool at all. Handles are wood or fiberglass; wood is replaceable and more forgiving, fiberglass survives weather and neglect better. Inspect the hook pivot and the handle before each use.
